Jade's News
Tamworth again this year was fantastic … with capacity crowds at every show.
It never ceases to amaze me that the fans keep coming back to the shows year after year … just like when we are on the road touring from town to town, city to city etc … which puts a lot of pressure on me to keep changing the content of the show as much as possible which in itself is a real problem because if I don’t perform certain songs, then the fans complain … I am talking about the classic songs like “Running Bear”, “Rockin’ All Over The World”, “Oh Boy”, “Trilogy”, “He’ll Have To Go” and the big production songs like Roy Orbison’s “Crying” and “Leah” to Conway Twitty’s “Only Make Believe” etc. |
 |
I have to say a huge thank you to Ian and the staff at the West Tamworth Sports and Bowling Club for their daily efforts in setting up the room for our shows … it is a huge task performed by some of the members of the club, to be there and set up and re-set up form show to show.
After Tamworth, we headed off once again to New Zealand where we have made so many new friends and fans. It constantly amazes me why many other aussie acts don’t tour New Zealand … as I look at it (purely from a touring perspective) as just another state of Aussie … and indeed, it is a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to get to tour in than a few Aussie states including Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory etc.
My New Zealand Manager, John Woolcott secured a couple of new venues this time through, which was great … so as well as our regular shows in Christchurch, Nelson and a few other great cities, this time John added the Timaru Town and Country Club, Oamaru Club, Gore RSA Club and the Papanui Club in Christchurch. We really look forward to the next time to catching up with the folk at these great new venues.
I have to also say a huge thanks to all the folk at TV New Zealand in Wellington who are so courteous and helpful every time they invite me onto the Good Morning New Zealand Show. Also to my great mate Phil Darkins who is a fellow performer who plays nice guitar and sings fabulous. I have the great pleasure of staying with Phil and his wife Natalie every time I go to New Zealand. Some Aussie radio listeners will probably remember Phil from his radio DJ days in various places in Australia before going back home to Wellington … and you can hear some of his latest recorded songs on www.cdbaby.com.
Having mentioned how surprised I am that other aussie acts don’t tour New Zealand … but I suspect the reason is cost as in my case, it is difficult having to get our gear (piano, piano stool, stage banner etc) transported from Australia to New Zealand and back again … and this is very expensive … and having to do all of this through export agents (who we have to pay) who have to get everything checked and re-checked in both Australia and New Zealand by the relevant customs (and there are customs fees all round as well … both ends) … so it can be a huge outlay before you even do one show.
Once again, many thanks to Peter and Gwyneth McWhirter and their staff at Canterbury Court Caravans in Christchurch for supplying us with motorhomes … as always, their support of our tours is really appreciated.
After returning home from New Zealand … we went straight away into the first leg of another Queensland tour starting at Chinchilla, then Dalby, Kingaroy and Gympie before heading further north to Hervey Bay.
These shows were followed by us travelling to Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay and Proserpine then a long trip down to Rainbow Beach to catch the barge over to the World Heritage listed Fraser Island to headline a show for the 2008 Toyota Fraser Island Fishing Competition. This is the second time I have done this show … the last time was 9 years ago … and I have to say that it is a fabulous couple of days going over to the island being driven in a four wheel drive (Toyota obviously), doing the show that night then driving all the way back along the beach to get the Barge across to Rainbow Beach again. We all had a Ball … apart for the fact that the show is out in the open and the weather was filthy with strong winds and rain … and it held off for about 4 songs into the show … then it poured down and obviously the hundreds of people scattered … but this is the luck of doing shows out in the open … but we still had a ball.
As you will be aware, I have been eagerly waiting on the brand new Jayco Optimum 26 Foot Motorhome ... but our sponsor JAYCO has been absolutely inundated with so many orders that for this part of the Queensland tour we were still in the Conquest Motorhome that we have now done over 61,000 klms in. Well I have to report that after we did our show for the Toyota Fraser Island Fishing Competition ... we travelled down to Brisbane to Brisbane Camperland ... which is the Jayco Premier Dealer in Brisbane ... to swap the Conquest over for the Brand New Jayco Optimum.
Honestly folks, I am not saying this because Gerry and Andrew Ryan and Bruce Astbury at JAYCO are so good to me ... but this new Optimum Motorhome has to be seen to be believed ... and just like all of the JAYCO products, it is not hard to see why a JAYCO ... is the preferred product to the greater majority of folk who know anything about quality caravans and motorhomes.
On my website ... click on News Flashes to see more photo’s of this wonderful palace on wheels which is beautifully sign written ... boy when Gerry and Andrew Ryan and Bruce Astbury at Jayco do something ... they certainly do it as well as possible.
I had two shows to perform at Twin Towns Services Club for this year’s Wintersun Festival at Coolangatta/Tweed Heads which started on 30th May and finished on 9th June.
One of these shows was on Friday June 6th during the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest ... which seeks to establish who is the best Elvis tribute artist in the world ... and the second show once again at Twin Towns was on Sunday 8th June, I was the special guest of my great mate Johnny Tillotson who had such hits as “It Keeps Right on a Hurtin”, “Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On”, “Poetry In Motion”, ‘Without You” and countless others. Johnny is one of the truly lovely guys of international entertainment ... and it was such a pleasure to catch up again with him and his wife Nancy.
Next we head off again up to north Queensland for shows at Charters Towers RSL Club, the Burdekin Motor Inn at Home Hill just outside of Ayr … then Townsville RSL. Then on to Mareeba up in the Atherton Tablelands and back to Cairns. In the coming weeks, we have shows in Sydney, Queensland and Melbourne and country Victoria.
A huge thank you to Susan Albertson who books all of my tours in Australia … thank you so much Susan. And folks, when you are reading this newsletter, you may have a venue in mind that we haven’t ever been to or haven’t been to for some time, please email Susan at albertsen@optusnet.com.au so she can look into the feasibility of perhaps including it into one of our tours.
Until the next newsletter ... all the best and "keep on rockin" ... and see you along the touring track.
Your friend and mate.

Arly's Bio
Arly Karlsen & The Back Beat Band
Arly Karlsen was born in 1954, near Kristiansand in South Norway. Growing up in a typical farming district, Arly bought his first guitar at the age of twelve. After that he set out on a path built upon a deep-rooted love of music and a desire to entertain, and went on to become lead singer and guitarist in numerous popular Norwegian bands during the 1970s.
At the start of the 1980s, Arly and fellow musicians Arne Løland and Liv Jorunn Heia formed "Western Swingers". Their debut album was released to great acclaim in 1983: "Sin egen Stil", and sold more than 20 000 copies across Norway. The band attracted a large fan-base through constant concert dates and TV/radio exposure, made 5 albums, selling hundreds of thousands of copies. They called it a day in 1996.
Arly focused on his business interests until 2001 when he launched a solo career. He writes a lot of the songs he records and performs live, and has co-written with several International songwriters including Americans Red Lane, Hank Cochran, Billy Don Burns, Danish writers Peter Borup and Ivan Johnsen; Norwegians Jan Vincents Johannessen and Arne Benoni.
Arly's debut solo album "Beyond The Mountains" was recorded in Denmark for Selina Records with producer Dion Egtved, and released in 2002. The Album contains classic country songs and brand new material from Arly and Danish songwriters.
The follow-up, "Country Home", was recorded in Nashville and released in March 2004. It featured duets with Nashville-based country stars Red Lane, Pat Roden and Billy Don Burns. Arly’s self-penned tribute to Johnny Cash, "Here’s To You (The Man in Black)", was the stand-out track from this album, and even Johnny’s brother, Tommy Cash, and his little sister, Joanne Cash Yates, said the song was one of the best Johnny Cash tributes they’d ever heard. "Country Home" has received huge airplay all over the World.
Arly's third solo-album, "Sweet Honky Tonk", was recorded again in Nashville during October 2004. Released in Scandinavia in May 2005 with a massive television, radio and press campaign. The Album contains classic country songs, and brand new material written by Arly. It features two duets with female country singers, Pat Roden (Nashville) and Pauline Reese (Texas). "Sweet Honky Tonk" has received outstanding reviews around the world; many radio stations have made it "album of the month" and fans have flooded Arly's website with emails and guestbook entries telling him it is the best CD he has made so far.
Arly’s music has been a favourite on radio stations worldwide, and the many singles he has released across Europe and around 30 countries, have established him as one of the most played country artists of the 21st century. Topping the prestigious European CMA Chart - the oldest country chart outside of Nashville, compiled from Spain - several times, including a 6 week spell for a duet. He was 1 several times on the "Worldwide Most Played Chart".
Arly's music video for "Here's To You (The Man in Black)" has been shown several times on National Norwegian and Danish Television, and Comcast TV in Nashville. It was no surprise that he was voted "World's Future Star" in 2004, a contest run from Nashville to find the next big thing in undiscovered talent, with artists entering from many countries globally. Arly represented Europe and scooped the top prize. Arly has performed shows in Europe and USA, including major festivals such as "Norsk Countryfest" at Breim in Norway; "Country Music Messe" in Berlin; "SCC Country Music Festival" in Silkeborg, Denmark; and concerts in USA at "Nashville Cowboy Church" (on stage with Joanne Cash Yates); "Second Fiddle" and "Legends Corner" in Nashville.
New Zealand country fans took Arly to their hearts when he toured there with Kiwi Joy Adams in November 2004 (combining his work with his honeymoon!) Arly has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in country music, including Joanne Cash Yates; Wanda Jackson; Johnny Logan; Billy Yates; The Bellamy Brothers; Dale Watson; Lucie Diamond; Joy Adams; Erin Hay; Billy Don Burns; Bjøro Håland; Heidi Hauge; Arne Benoni; Tomboola Band; Tamra Rosanes and numerous other US and European artists.
Arly loves to work with different artists from other countries and backgrounds. He paired up with the UK's 1 country star, Lucie Diamond, in 2005 to record two duets. In September, their version of the classic 'Always On My Mind' will be released worldwide - the very first time the song has been covered as a duet. In August 2005, Arly invited Lucie to guest with him at the famous SCC Country Festival in Silkeborg, Denmark - Scandinavia's largest country music festival - opening for The Bellamy Brothers, to sing the duet live for the first time ever. Lucie and Arly were the hit of the entire festival. They plan to work together again.
Arly has a voice with a huge range - one moment mining the depths of a bass-baritone and then squeezing every inch of sweetness out of his unique vocal instrument. Above all else, he lets you experience his feelings contained in his music, easily conveyed to the listener. Arly sings with passion, feeling and emotion - at all times! Arly will never be predictable. Nor will he churn out the same old country year after year. His reputation for quality music and a huge talent, spreads ever wider day-by-day - massive hits on his website, testament to that.

2YYY Requests ACMA To Review It's Decision
2YYY requests ACMA to review its decision regarding time share arrangements for community broadcast licence
Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting Inc. has formally written to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) requesting that it review its decision to allocate a shared Temporary licence with the Young District Community Arts council.
Mr Wayne Nolan, Chair of the Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting Board, has written to the Chair of ACMA, and to the General Manager of Community Broadcasting, stating that there are a number of critical matters that were not taken into account by ACMA made its final decision.
Contrary to its media release issued on Friday 27 June which announced its decision, ACMA had recently advised the Board on 5 June 2008 that Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting Inc was now fully compliant with its license conditions and that it was satisfied with the measures taken by the Board.
In the report on investigation 1869, which is dated 20 May 2008, Kate Timms, Manager of Community Broadcasting Group states;
“LFCB has put in place appropriate arrangements to promote compliance with the sponsorship time limit provisions of the BSA and has imposed additional restrictions on the presenter responsible for the breaches.” (20 May 2008)
Clearly there is a contradiction between the advice received by Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting on 5 June, and the media release issued by ACMA on 27 June 2008 which announced the Temporary Licence Conditions, and the Board is very concerned that Friday’s decision to install time share arrangements has not taken into account ACMA’s own investigation findings.
The Board is also concerned that ACMA stated that Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting inc. had not submitted its June compliance report, which ACMA has now admitted it ‘misplaced’, and could not been taken into account in its final decision.
“These errors raise serious questions about whether other information which was sent to ACMA before the final decision was made, was actually reviewed by the relevant person recommending time share Temporary Broadcasting Licensing arrangements.
“There is no reference anywhere in the media release, or the background, to state that ACMA had received our nine page detailed submission sent by registered post and via email, prior to the 24 June deadline. Nor have we received acknowledgement that ACMA has received the 2500 signatures on the petition or large numbers of letters and emails which were also forwarded to ACMA.” Mr Nolan, Chair of the Board of Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting stated.
The Board also believes that ACMA is not aware that the Young District Arts Council has recently applied for a commercial licence to broadcast on another frequency which only became known because of questions raised by Councillor John McGregor at a recent Young Shire Council meeting.
“The Board is extremely concerned that the Young District Community Arts Council application for both a commercial AND a community broadcast licence, is an attempt to control both the commercial and community frequencies available in Young, at the expense of Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting inc., which operates as a not for profit organisation. The actions of the Young District Community Arts Council, place in jeopardy the diversity of radio in Young..” Mr Nolan stated.
A letter outlining the Boards concerns with process undertaken by ACMA will also be sent to the Federal Minister for Communications, Senator The Hon. Stephen Conroy, asking for his intervention in the matter. The Board also provided a copy of its submission and correspondence with ACMA to the Minister, and has been forwarding copies of petitions demonstrating the overwhelming community support for Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting Inc. and Radio 2YYY.
“The Board and Management of 2YYY believe that there are some serious issues which must be further considered by ACMA, and the Minister for Communications in relation to the time share arrangements for the Temporary Licence issued by ACMA.
“We intend to exhaust every avenue to make sure that Radio 2YYY continues to offer community broadcast radio to the community of Young. We will not rest until we are able to deliver, the best local and community broadcast for our community all year round.” Mr Nolan concluded.

Country News Gary Turner Mrs. Dusty
Joy McKean picked up the Best Composition Award in 1973 for Lights on the Hill, 1975 for Biggest Disappointment, 1978 for Indian Pacific and was the eighth pioneering Australian country music act to be elevated to the Country Music Roll of Renown with Sister Heather in 1983. |
 |
By the 1940s Joy and Sister Heather were making appearances at school concerts and charity shows.
In 1949 Joy and Heather began presenting their own country music radio show from radio 2KY in Sydney.
They gave us the country classics Yodel Down the Valley and The Morning Mail.
In 1951 Joy McKean married Slim Dusty (Gordon Parsons was best man) and Sister Heather married Reg Lindsay 3 years later in 1954.
Slim Dusty (real name David Kirkpatrick) worked as a plasterer for a short time and lived in a house he built in Epping NSW whilst expecting their first child.
Anne Kirkpatrick was born on July 4, 1952 and just two years later her parents were on the road with their own musical troupe.
Anne won the Best Female Vocalist at the Australasian Music Awards in Tamworth in 1979.
In 1970 Slim Dusty became the first country music entertainer to receive the MBE and the rest is history.
Joy grew up listening to Jimmie Rogers, Carter Family and Harry Torrani.
These days Joy enjoys listening to Beccy Cole, Gina Jeffreys, Sara Storer, Adam Harvey, Amos Morris and one of her favourites Troy Cassar-Daley.
“Troy is a lovely young man and l enjoy his music very much said Joy
I caught up with Joy McKean (Mrs. Dusty) on Monday and spoke to her about her life without Slim, the new Slim Dusty Family album and the Reunion Tour.
“Slim’s music goes on forever as he has left a great legacy said Joy.
“Since Slim died many people have been asking whether l will go on the road with Slim’s music”
I asked Joy had it been easy to get the family together for this Reunion Tour.
“It has been a jolly lot of work quipped Joy but I can’t wait to meet all our friends we met when l toured with Slim.
“I will be sitting in the same dressing rooms l shared with Slim.
The album Reunion – The Slim Dusty Family (EMI) features unreleased songs sung by Slim from an album that Slim did before he died in 2003 and at least one of his lost songs written in 1942.
Anne and David Kirkpatrick plus four grandchildren, James, Kate, Hannah and Daniel are featured on the album.
“It blew me away when l saw the album on top of the country charts and in the mainstream ARIA Album Charts as well”
I asked Joy if she was a proud grandmother with this release.
“I am thrilled at the talent of the grandchildren
“It is so hard to get the family all together for this tour as David is a specialist in emergency medicine and Kate is a sub editor for a magazine.
“This tour is not likely to happen again with 3 generations on stage together.
“It will be handy to have our own doctor on the tour.
“James is a talented singer/songwriter/producer having produced our DVD.
“Hannah is also a talented songwriter.
The album features tracks written by Don Walker, Paul Kelly, Anne Kirkpatrick, Hannah Kirkpatrick, James Arneman, Peter Denahy, Joy McKean, David Kirkpatrick, Eric Bogle and Slim Dusty.
Joy said they were terribly disappointed that they would not make it to Melbourne on this tour but there was no venue available although they will do 2 concerts in country Victoria.
I asked Joy about Slim’s famous Ford Fairlane and any chance l could take it off her hands!
“No way quipped Joy; it is sitting in the garage and l start it up every now and again and it is running like a charm.
“Eventually the car will be placed in the Slim Dusty Centre in Kempsey when it is completed”
To commemorate what would have been Slim Dusty’s 81st birthday on June 13th, EMI Music has released a new single How Good It Is written by Slim Dusty fan, Cold Chisel co-founder Don Walker.
The track was recorded by Slim just before he fell ill back in 2001.

Leroy Van Dyke
Leroy Frank Van Dyke (born 4 October 1929 in Mora, Missouri) is billed as "The World’s Most Famous Auctioneer".
Leroy was catapulted into country music recording fame in 1956 by his own composition "Auctioneer," which has to date sold an estimated three million records. He wrote the song about the life of his cousin, National Auctioneers Association Hall of Famer Ray Sims, also a Missourian. Leroy later had the lead role of a budding country music performer in the movie What Am I Bid?, in which Ray Sims played himself as an auctioneer. |
 |
In his fifty years plus career, Van Dyke has recorded some 500 songs, dozens of them making the charts. His record of "Walk On By" (1961) was named by Billboard Magazine in 1994 as the biggest country single of all time, based on sales, plays and weeks in the charts. It stayed at number one for nineteen weeks, and in all, charted for 42 weeks, selling approximately three million records.
Other Van Dyke notable hits were "If A Woman Answers," "Black Cloud," "Big Man In A Big House," "Anne Of A Thousand Days," "Happy To Be Unhappy," "Night People," "Be A Good Girl," "Dim Dark Corner," "Five Steps Away," "How Long Must You Keep Me A Secret," "Afraid Of A Heartache," "Big Wide Wonderful World Of Country Music," "Birmingham," "Just A State Of Mind," "Mr. Professor," "My World Is Caving In," "The Other Boys Are Talking," "Poor Guy," "Roses From A Stranger," "Texas Tea," "Who’s Gonna Run The Truck Stop In Tuba City When I’m Gone," "Wrong Side Of The Tracks," "Your Daughter Cried All Night," "Your Money," and "The Life You Offered Me."
He was co-host, with Bill Mack, of the Southern Baptist Radio/TV Commission-produced "Country Crossroads" radio show for ten years, and was later joined by a third co-host, Jerry Clower. This became the most widely syndicated radio show in country music history.
Van Dyke continues a full performance schedule, traveling from his office/home complex on his 1,000-acre (4 km²) ranch in west central Missouri near Sedalia. He is a member of the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame, is active in many music industry organizations and, as a sideline, raises premium quality Arabian mules. All aspects of his Leroy Van Dyke Enterprises are managed by his wife, Gladys, former legal secretary/court reporter. Their son Ben, plays lead guitar with all Van Dyke performances.

Dead Setters
Hearty greetings friends & neighbours!
Hard on the heels of last Sunday’s album launch, this week finds some of the band having a spot of r & r (Chris is continuing his worldwide search for the perfect cup of coffee- this time concentrating on parts of NZ).
Performing in stripped back trio mode we begin the w/e at our usual Friday night hang-out, Petersham Bowlo where we once again invite you to enjoy the convivial atmosphere of the inner-west’s premier pokie-free night-spot. Good for a warming wintry night & the “Wok on the Green” does do a very tasty dish.
Sunday night (6th July) finds us at the Bald Rock in sunny Lilyfield at the new earlier time of 5pm ‘till 8pm- well we hope it’s sunny this week as we seem to have been taking the rain with us to a number of our shows recently (outback rain-making tour anyone?). Here, in keeping with the Sunday pm vibe, we are similarly in acoustic mode. The food here’s pretty good too.
Culinarily yours Slim Buckle
