My Bio
I was born on Kangaroo Island and my parents go back generations. I went away as a teenager, married, then came back and had three boys before being divorced.
I have been a Mail Contractor, owned a Takeaway business, became a Chef before becoming a disabled pensioner. I took up sewing as therapy and still run my part time sewing business. As I was not able to get around I enjoyed the music on our local community radio station, back then it only had live presenters about four hours a week. Not ever thinking I would do something as crazy as being on air I just went to have a look, and after two half hour trial shows I was given a key and the rest is history.
[I just tell my friends I am a senile Senior]
I was given a key and told to go for it. I started with Monday and Thursday Country Breakfast 7- 9am, the other presenters only did 7.30 to 8.30am but me being me I had to do more. After a while the other presenters dropped out one by one.
I did Friday Breakfast 7- 9am and I decided to do an Irish – Scottish program.
The station manager dropped her “Walk Down Memory Lane” on Sunday morning 9.30 - 11.30am, so I took that on too, making it “Million Sellers from the 30's-50's”. Then as if that wasn’t enough I took on the LBS hour 1- 2pm Monday, and then Monday Afternoon Country 2- 4pm, then Easy listening 4-5pm.
Then the Big Band show folded, so hear I go again on Tuesday 12- 2pm Jazz and 2 - 4pm Big band 4- 5pm Easy Listening.
At the moment I am putting together a Welsh program and then there's Rock ‘N’ Roll. I don't know where I find time For Sewing
I go to Festivals when I can and I support Aussie artists they are my passion. Wally Sparrow and Sarah Tomilson of Radio Adelaide, Joe McMamamon of Manilla and Bev Coad of TBC Bordertown have helped me heaps as I have no support or training, I do it all by the skin of my teeth.
I am very passionate about what I do. I spent twelve months as the fund raiser for the station and with the help of my friends raised a large sum of money. [But we won't go any further with that one]
I do it for the community and the artists and I love every minute of it but I have so much to learn as I would like to be good at what I do.
In that time I have had several operations and I am now able to get around without the walking frame, I have even given away the walking sticks. So I hope I can make a difference and even if I can brighten one person’s life each day, it’s all worthwhile. The artists have been so supportive in given me music to play.
It is a great big beautiful world and I say thank you everyday for all my blessings, and thanks to all my new wonderful friends, I am blessed
Thank you
Merilyn
