Denise Brooks Interview

Here is one lady who I had heard of for some time before I actually heard her singing. I had been told she was good, but when I did finally get to hear her, I had to agree she was good. Thank you Denise I really like your album and keep up the good work.

Q: Where were you born and where did you grow up?

A: I was born in Penrith NSW and lived in Plumpton NSW until I was 9 before moving to Dandenong Vic where I lived until 17 and then moved to Maryborough Qld area

Denise Brooks

Q: Was there anyone in particular who played an influential part in shaping your career?

A: I have been influenced and encouraged by many people although they are probably not as well known in the industry as they deserve to be.   Sharon Heaslip recommended I enter ABBA StarQuest in Tamworth which led me to Buddy Thomson and Lyn Bennett whom I hold in the highest esteem not just as musos…but as friends as well.   Bob Magee has been there every step of the way and has been my rock.   I guess if I was to pick someone whose style of music has influenced me most it would be Anne Kirkpatrick.   There are far too many to list and I know I would forget some and that would be unfair.   To anyone and everyone who has been there and continues to be there…..thanx a million.

Q: How long is it since you first got started in the industry?

A: I first started playing drums at the age of 13…had my first singing lesson at 18, but never really took it seriously until about 6 years ago

Q: What year did you do your first recording?

A: 2003 – A single CD which I recorded for the Royal Flying Doctor Service Spirit of Queensland Awards called – You’re Not Alone

Q: What was it that made you decide to go into the recording industry?

A: I actually never thought I was good enough to record, and it wasn’t until I toured with Stan J Hunt as part of the Country Classics in 2005 that enough people convinced me to give it a try….now I love it

Q: I know you’ve had a regular booking at the caravan park in Longreach, would you like to elaborate on that?

A: We were talking to Tom McIvor in Tamworth this year and he mentioned that he wanted to take this season off and he asked us if  we would be interested in doing the season for him.   Bob and I had performed at the Park the year before as part of a tour we were doing so everyone agreed and here we are.
The Show has become an indoor show now partly due to the weather and is receiving great comments from the visitors, Park Management and Head Office, which we are so thrilled about.

Q: I also believe you have been noticed by the Stockman’s Hall of Fame at Longreach, tell me more about that.

A: We were lucky enough to be asked to perform at the Hall Of Fame during the Drovers Reunion Week when I decided to approach the HOF with an idea for a music video, using a track from my CD.  The track Our Women Pioneers tells of the struggles and hardships faced by pioneering women and was written by Ray Rose and won the NT Songwriter Award 2008 for Bush Ballad.
The idea was to utilize the Women of the West exhibition together with the statue of “Martha” which is representative of the Pioneering Women as the basis for the music video.   The HOF have agreed to the idea and put their support behind it in raising the necessary funds to complete the video.

Q: How much time do you spend “on the road”?

A: Normally about 4 or 5 months but this year we have been based at Longreach since April and will continue here until the end of September.

Q: What do you do when you’re not touring?

A: Preparing for the next tour and attending the major Festivals like Tamworth, Bungendore, Boondooma and the like

Q: You released "One Of Kidman's Men" on Hillcrest, Hillcrest seems to do very well on the charts. What lead you to release a track with Ross & Hillcrest?

A: Ross emailed me and asked if I was interested in releasing a single internationally through Hillcrest.  I wasn't sure at the time because Pioneers and Poets was such an Australian CD.   I sent a copy to him and he thought that One Of Kidman's Men was very radio friendly for the countries that Hillcrest serviced.   The rest as they say is history.   It is so important to deal with the right people when making these decisions...I would not have picked One Of Kidman's Men and I am so thankful to Ross for knowing his market so well.

Q: Your most memorable musical occasion?

A: There have been lots and I am still so amazed that all these good things are happening to me but receiving an email from your publicist (RhonBob Promotions) saying One Of Kidman’s Men is #1 in the UK is pretty memorable

Q: Your most embarrassing musical moment

A: Again there have been lots…like dropping drumsticks…, forgetting words

Q: I have placed the titles of the tracks on your album below, and you may add a comment to any or all of them if you wish.

Q: Is there anything you would like to add that we haven’t already mentioned?

A: I am just so thankful that I have been given the opportunities to do something I really love.  Also to the DJ’s and reviewers who are playing my music and have said so many kind things about me and to anyone who has bought the CD or requested the music video on CMC – I truly appreciate it. I would also like to thank Rhonda Sinclair from BLURB Creative Solutions.  If anyone is passing through Longreach – don’t forget to drop in and say hello.

Q: Thank you Denise for taking part in this interview. I’m sure there will be lots of people out there who will be interested to hear about Denise Brooks.

Born In Boots Celebrates It's 10th Anniversary

July ‘08 is a month filled with recall, fun, prizes and celebration at Curtin Radio 100.1 FM when management, country music fans, community and artists acknowledged the 10th anniversary of Western Australia’s long-standing and very popular country music radio show, Born in Boots.

Hosted by Brendon T Moylan, the six-hour program can boast that it is one of Australia’s longest single dedicated country music radio shows outside the 24/7 stations.

From the early days of being a one-and-a-half hour ‘fill in’ show, Born in Boots has matured into the program it is now because of the popularity of

Brendon T Moylan

the format - one that Brendon T has himself developed, honed and implemented.

Now after celebrating its 10TH anniversary on air, the show continues to grow and expand its appeal by streaming live around the world on www.borninboots.com

During the past ten years of community broadcasting, Born in Boots has also been instrumental in raising funds to support numerous charities and communities in need of assistance.

Contributions as a result of the fundraising events organized by Brendon T and his lovely wife, Janiece have usually totalled $10,000 and upward for each and every event.

Charities and organizations such as, The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal (an annual event), Moora Flood relief, Tsunami Relief, Warrawee Woman’s Shelter, The Father Bryan Appeal, The Cerebral Palsy Association, Cystic Fibrosis, and Camp Quality (to name just a few) have benefited.

However it is not just charities that have gained from Born in Boots’ community involvement.  A staunch supporter of Australian artists, Brendon T Moylan has also helped launch the careers of many local Perth country music artists, releasing and promoting their music to the public.

He has implemented the release of the Best in the West compilations, the first volume being distributed Australia-wide 5 years ago, showcasing and drawing much needed attention the superb music talent residing in the West.  Volume 2 will be out soon to coincide with the show’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

Brendon T Moylan is one of Australia’s most respected and popular radio presenters and this can be evidenced by his involvement on judging panels for many local and high profile interstate country awards.   The last two years, Brendon T himself has been honoured as a finalist in The People Choice Awards in Tamworth in the Best Country Show and Best Country DJ categories.

His and the show’s popularity is such that at the recent fundraiser Radiothon for Curtin FM, Born in Boots listeners donated a staggering $25,145 in the 6 hours that the program aired, highlighting their passionate support and dedication for this very special program.

Listeners can tune into Brendon T Moylan’s dedicated Country Music program every Saturday from midday until six wherever they are in Western Australia, Australia or in fact the World as it streams live on www.borninboots.com

Johanna Hemara Sails On High Seas

NfS 123 Track 20  Daddy |from album Goodnight Sweetheart

Sydney singer, yodeller and songwriter Johanna Hemara released her debut album May 31, and not long after the filmclip of the first single Daddy played on CMC.

Distributed on NfS 123 Daddy is a very personal writing for Johanna whose superb vocals are captured brilliantly on her new album Goodnight Sweetheart.   Standouts are the yodel classics, exquisitely aided by the sweet delivery of guitarist Neil Cheverton penned lyrics plus co-writers including Johanna herself making for a great first release album.

This month, Johanna was quick off the mark setting sail in the Pacific Ocean guest appearing on a 10 day cruise.  The P&O cruise docks in Auckland on Tuesday night.  Then it’s back to Sydney for a Charity Event at Telstra Stadium next Saturday.

Johanna Hemara

The 28 year old singer songwriter started singing and yodelling at a very young age, taking home a number of awards in Country Music Capital Tamworth including some of the most prestigious new talent events the KMart Jazzer Smith Award and the Barry Thornton Encouragement Award.

In 2004 Johanna was named a Top 20 finalist in the prestigious Toyota Starmaker and in 2007 she was a Johnny O'Keefe Best New Talent nominee at the 31st MO awards.

Best known for her ability to yodel with ease, and her amazing vocal range, Johanna can sing just about any style of music although country from contemporary to country rock, big ballads and yodeling is her passion.  And she’s no stranger to live television work appearing on The Clive Robinson Show, Good Morning Australia, The Midday Show, Starsearch and New Faces.

The combination of Johanna’s dynamic vocals, versatility and stage presence has always set her apart, and she has plenty of career awards and accolades as testimonial, including a Star Maker finalist berth, and also a finalist in the Best New Talent section of the MO Awards.

Her first single Daddy is a heartfelt song written by Johanna as a tribute to her dad ‘Cookie’ who passed away suddenly at the young age of 52. A beautiful ballad, Daddy tells the story of Johanna trying to cope and understand why it happened and dealing with the fact she never got to say goodbye.             Profile NfS 123

2008 Toyota Star Maker Talia Wittmann
Releases Debut Album

When Talia Wittmann won Toyota Star Maker in Tamworth this year she joined the ranks of some outstanding Australian talent...previous Star Maker winners include Keith Urban, Beccy Cole, Lee Kernaghan, Gina Jeffreys and James Blundell.

Talia Wittmann - Reckless Side Of Me

Australia with his family in 1953 from Germany, her mother Rosalee was born in Australia. Talia has two sisters, Sasha and Shana, and a brother Karl.  Talia grew up in the small town of Verdun in the Adelaide Hills on her parents' property. Her interests as a child included dancing, playing sport, riding horses and motorbikes.

During primary school, Talia also took up singing and guitar lessons and competed in various talent quests winning various placings. In 1998, Talia started her high school education at Modbury High where she studied subjects like biology, chemistry and geography, achieving an amazing tertiary entrance rank of 95.05.

In 2003, Talia completed Certificate III in music at TAFE and began to concentrate solely on her music. She went on to study a Bachelor of Music by correspondence for 12 months through the Mackay Conservatorium of Music and then moved to Mackay for a further semester of study on campus. Jessica Simpson To Premiere
Come On Over" Video On Jessicasimpson.Com

Jessica Simpson will release her highly anticipated debut country album, "Do You Know?", September 2008. Produced by Brett James and John Shanks, Simpson co-wrote all but three of the tracks featured on the disc, including her current Top 25 hit single, “Come On Over.”

Simpson is certainly ready to come on over to country music. Recorded in Nashville, this album gives listeners an inside look into the real Jessica Simpson. “Every single song is a piece of my heart … who I am,” comments Simpson. “I’m not what everybody thinks that I am. Believe it or not, I’m a simple country girl. I might buy expensive shoes,” she laughs,

Jessica Simpson.

“But, I’m definitely a simple country girl and this album will hopefully give people a sense of who Jessica is again.”
Helping share Simpson’s story is none other than country legend Dolly Parton who lends her powerful vocals to the title track, “Do You Know.” Parton wrote this record just for Simpson. “It’s such a great song,” comments Simpson. “I’m so blessed to be able to sing with her on it … she is so much a part of me finding myself as an artist.”

Jessica Simpson has premiered her latest music video for the Top 25 smash “Come On Over” on her website – www.jessicasimpson.com. Shot at Little Creek Ranch in southern California under the skillful direction of Liz Friedlander, Simpson turns up the heat and effortlessly conveys the sexy, confident attitude of the song. For those make-up mavens out there, watch for a glimpse of the elegant bottle of Simpson’s soon-to-be unveiled fragrance, “Fancy,” available in select stores later this year.

Ronni Rae Rivers New Single I Would Want To
NfS 123 Track 1 Out Now

Following the success of Cowboys Come Home, Ronni Rae Rivers returns to her more traditional country roots with the new single I Would Want To from her forthcoming CD Whole Heart to Give produced by Herm Kovac.

Ronni Rae Rivers

This hauntingly beautiful ballad demonstrates Ronni Rae’s ability to strike a dynamic balance between contemporary and traditional country music styles.

Though she has often been likened vocally to the smooth sound of Trisha Yearwood this song has a hint of a young Tanya Tucker.

Telling the story of a lost love and the emotional struggle in deciding whether or not to allow the heart to risk getting hurt again, this song has an instant classic appeal to it.

Ronni Rae delivers a stellar performance and is set to take her career to new heights with this single.
