Mikes Bio
To condence 50 Years into a few lines is difficult, but here goes.....................
Mike Casey first started in England at the age of 11 in a school band playing jazz and pop music of the day. Approximately 1966 he joined a 16 piece orchestra. Working with such people as Olivia Newton John, Lulu, Sandy Shaw, Del Shanon, and Shirley Bassey.
He was also resident Bass Player at a recording studio, and was introduced to country music. This sent him in a whole new direction. He liked the down to earth and honest feel of country music. This was when he started singing. He spent the next 15 years or so as Bass player in various combinations touring The UK.
One huge buzz was supporting George Jones at The Wembly Stadium in London. He also toured Germany singing at the American and English Army and Airforce bases.
In 1986 Mike made the move to Australia, met Greg Parsons and joined his band Country Shuffle, which was originally formed to be Heather McKean's band, (The MaKean Sisters) and was given the opportunity to meet and work with some of the great pioneers of Australian music, like Gordon Parsons, Barry Thornton and the legendary Slim Dusty. Mike and the band played at Slim's birthday party for four years on the trot and supported him at shows in outback New South Wales.
Over the last twenty years Mike has sung at the Opera House, Charters Towers Festival where he was invited to be a judge at the talent quest. He has done shows from Tasmania to Ceduna to Rockhampton and Makay with hundreds of gigs in between. He likes a wide variety of music, but with his relaxed style country is his favorite.
So after 50 years in the music business Mike Casey has recorded his first CD, which he called "Memories To Burn" which is probably an understatement. Recorded by Steve Newton at Enrec Studios features some of the best musicians in Australia...Peter Figures, Andrew Claremont, Mike Festa, Garry Steele, Steve Newton and vocal backing by Kerry Walsh of Those Gals.

Secretary Debbi Jones chats with Owen Blundell.
Reg Poole & Owen Blundell have recently been on tour in Queensland & Northern NSW. Last Friday Night they were at the Wauchope Country Club.
While they were there they got to meet up with their regular fans as well as catch up with the committee members of the Wauchope Country Music Festival. Both Owen & Reg like the idea of Wauchope having it’s own festival, and they will be two of the artists appearing at the festival.
The festival is gaining a lot of support from far & near. Keep watching this space.

Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland
Check out the new Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland bio pic "CRAZY" because it looks pretty durn good and is about a true Nashville session legend.
http://www.crazy-themovie.com/news/index.html
I wrote a story about Hank Garland a few years ago, for my website of the time, and it was read by his sister-in-law in America who contacted me. But at the time, Hank was dying in hospital which was so sad to hear. But his sister in law asked me to send my music which I did, but I don't know if Hank ever heard it.
She told me there was going to be a movie made of Hank's life, and that a car accident that he was badly injured in - was "more than an accident" but whether that is revealed in the movie, time will tell. |
 |
About Hank
Hank Garland is a legendary Nashville session guitarist whose career extended to many different areas of music, most notably pop, rock, country, and jazz. His story is an interesting one.
He was born Walter Louis Garland in Cowpens, South Carolina in 1930 and learned to play a guitar at age six. He performed on some radio shows as a teenager and by the late 1940's Garland had made his way to Nashville. At age 19 he played on a hit country record Sugarfoot Rag, which was a million seller.
He came to know the Nashville music scene and was in demand as a session guitar player. A very talented musician who could add a great deal to a recording by nearly any artist, Garland worked with many of the music stars of the 50's and early 60's.
Among the country stars on this list were Hank Williams, Sr., Cowboy Copas, Marty Robbins, Mel Tillis, Patsy Cline, the Everly Brothers, Conway Twitty, and Brenda Lee, and from pop/rock he performed with Bobby Helms, Bobby Darin, Roy Orbison, and Elvis Presley.
By the late 50's he had developed a strong interest in jazz, and worked with such notables as Barry Galbraith, George Benson, George Shearing, and Charlie Parker, mostly in New York City. Hank Garland recorded some albums under his own name, mostly jazz albums, in the late 50's and early 60's.
Garland spent a great deal of time with Elvis Presley beginning in 1957, and does guitar work on some of Presley's hits such as A Big Hunk 'O Love and Little Sister. Other well known records on which his work can be heard include Bye Bye Love, Jingle Bell Rock and I Fall To Pieces.
While working on the soundtrack of Presley's movie Follow That Dream in September 1961, Garland was involved in a serious automobile accident in Tennessee.
He was in a coma for months and had significant memory loss. Hank Garland underwent a series of shock treatments. He had to learn to walk and talk again, and how to play the guitar again. He recovered to an extent but was in poor health and lost a lot of his aggressiveness, and spent some time in Nashville area hospitals. He was not able to perform again professionally.
From the time he was a teenager until his automobile accident at age 30, Garland built a reputation for himself as a legendary guitarist. He spent his later years battling record companies over royalties, dealing with his health issues, and working on a biographical movie about his career.
The movie, titled Crazy, is due out in 2007 with actor Waylon Payne portraying Garland in the lead role.
Hank Garland suffered from a staph infection and died at a medical center in Orange Park, Florida on December 27, 2004 at age 74. He is admired by some in the world of music for his outstanding ability as a guitarist.

2YYY Thanks The Community Of Young For Overwhelming Support
Hi everyone
Below is a media release regarding the recent response to our petition. It has been overwhelming and thank you to everyone who has support our station.
Please pass this on to anyone who has an interest in the continuation of community radio.
Regards
Kerry
Media Release
Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting Inc. today thanked the community of Young and surrounding districts for their overwhelming support for the continued broadcast of Radio 2YYY, and is hopeful that Tuesday’s decision by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) reflects the sentiments of the community - that Radio 2YYY should be the only community broadcaster in Young.
Mr Wayne Nolan, Chair of the Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting Board, today stated that the support of Radio 2YYY by the Young Shire council, and thousands of residents from Young and surrounding districts was far greater than anyone had expected.
“We received over 3,000 signatures on a petition in support of 2YYY, and both the station and the Board have been inundated by phone calls, letters, emails from as far away as Dubbo, and the North Coast,” Mr Nolan stated.
The Board also sought today to deny any speculation that the station is in financial difficulty, stating that the organisation is in the strongest position it has been since it commenced operations in 2004.
“The newly appointed Board of Directors, has implemented changes to the operations of the Station in order to secure its financial future. There is no doubt that the past couple of years have been difficult for the station, due to a number of poor decisions made by the previous board. Thankfully those times are in the past, and with a new Board which is determined to implement a new strategic plan, the future of 2YYY is rock solid,” Mr Nolan explained.
Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting Inc. has submitted a letter and a full written submission to ACMA, to help inform its decision on the proposal to time share the broadcasting arrangements with Young District Community Arts Council. Similarly, the Board has also called on the Federal Minister for Communications to intervene, and argued that any decision which restricts any broadcaster in Young to six monthly time share broadcasting arrangements will only see the end of community broadcasting in Young indefinitely.
Mr Nolan went on to explain, “Radio 2YYY has long established sponsorship arrangements with most of the business community in Young, and these arrangements must be honored through the continued broadcast by 2YYY. Even by the Chair of the Young District Community Arts Council’s own admission, they will be completely reliant on Government grants to keep their yet to be established station viable. Unfortunately, what they fail to realise is government broadcasting grants are not available for holders of Temporary Broadcasting Licences.
“This is why 2YYY has worked so hard in recent times to secure sponsors support for the future of community broadcasting in Young, and why the decision by ACMA is critical to for the future of community broadcast in Young.
Mr Nolan concluded by saying that it was unfortunate that the Young District Arts Council, joined by a former Board member of the Lambing Flat Community Broadcasting Inc, had tried to undermine the positive changes which have been implemented at 2YYY.
“The current Board is not interested in getting caught up in the self interests of a few, when the focus should be on providing the very best community broadcast possible for Young, which is exactly what 2YYY has been delivering for the past 4 years.
“Now that the Board has acknowledged the poor financial management by the previous board, and implemented changes to ensure the Station is financially viable, we need to get on with the job of continuing to be best, and most listened to radio station in Young. I am sure that ACMA will recognise this in their decision this week,” Mr Nolan concluded.

The Beggars are a distinctly Australian acoustic trio. They started in their home town of Adelaide when renowned singer songwriters Quinton Dunne, Stuart Day and Renee Donaghey began writing and singing together. Beggar’s unique sound is a blend of folk, country and pop music and it has found them an international audience of music lovers.
The Beggars presentation is full of charm and humor. When they rework cover songs like Dreams by Fleetwood Mac it sounds like the song was written just for the Beggars. But you will be held spellbound as they sing their own tunes including their international hit Preacher I Have Sinned.
The Beggars stage presence and style have taken them around the world and their self titled CD continues to gain them fans in many countries.
