 |
Fremantle, will be live on Internet at www.radiofremantle.com Visitors to the website can also listen to programmes for 7 days from the time of broadcast in Archives.
I was offered the chance to come to a more sociable timeslot and extend by an hour, so decided to use the chance to not only move my all Australasian Show, but to add an hour of Country Music from around the world . Both segments will still feature mainly "Indies" as I feel they are the ones that most need airplay.
Guests, either live in Studio or as phone ins will continue to be a part of thev new timed programme.
Any Indies out there that want airtime are welcome to contact me at derek1@iinet.net.au for details of where to send material.
Just for info , My Last Evening show on 28th April 2008 featured Alison Hams & Mark Tempany, who are appearing at Rocky CMC in their only WA show on Sat 3rd May 2008.
Cheers

Opal Blue Delivers Massive European Radio Hit For Jeanette Wormald
The title track and first European single from Jeanette Wormald’s album Opal Blue has jumped 60 places to number 26 in two weeks since entering Europe’s ECMA Top 100 Country Radio Airplay Chart.
It is Jeanette Wormald’s first release and first hit overseas.
The song first entered the charts at number 86 two weeks ago and this week jumped to number 26 for the survey week ending March 9. Inclusion on the charts is based strictly on an airplay playlist report basis.
Singer songwriter, Jeanette Wormald, said the radio success is a huge boost and confirms growing international appeal for her music.
“This a huge response and even more special since it is the first time I |

have released my music into the European market,” she says.
“When I released the single through Hillcrest last year I received an overwhelming response from European broadcasters who were particularly fascinated by my story and my passion to celebrate contemporary Australia through original music.”
The news that Jeanette had entered the charts came as she travelled up to the Aboriginal community of Oak Valley in the Great Victoria Desert to continue her Maralinga Inma project to celebrate cultural identity and build self esteem amongst the musicians there, through writing and performing original music. She returned last week after almost three weeks in the community.
“I was out of range near Yalata, when the call from Ross Allen in Canada came through on my mobile. I was so excited,” she says. Ross Allen runs the Hillcrest Radio Distribution service.
Jeanette shared her news with the band, the Maralinga Desert Band, who were also excited for her.
“One of our dreams is to get me and the band to play in Europe. There is a huge interest in Australian music and indigenous music overseas.” She says.
Opal Blue has now delivered five radio hits for Jeanette Wormald, including two top ten and two top 20 hits in Australia, and a Golden Guitar nomination. The title track reached number 6 in Australia last year.

Angus Gill
A young Country Music fan with high hopes for the future. He is having guitar lessons to help him "on the road of song". Angus went to Tamworth in January and took part in one of the talent quests out there. He was also an enterant in this year's Holiday Coast Talent Quest at Wauchope. Angus likes to look the part when he goes on stage to take part in talent quests, & thought it would be good if his dog looked the part as well. Angus had "Nan" make this "Akubra" for "man's best friend." |

Rowie Invited To Be Part Of Aussie Music Event
In US!!!
Broken Hill's Stephen Rowe has been invited to be part of a special Australian Music event taking place in the US.
Hopkins Music and Advance LA will be presenting "Oz City Gets A New Groove" which will be a night of networking, discussions and a showcase of Australian music taking place at Nettwork Records in Hollywood on 6th May.
|
 |
Stephen Rowe will join rock artists Porcelain, Leroy Lee and Late Nite Access for the showcase. Industry speakers will include Cameron Daddo, Leslie Frank (legal advisor to Jet and Silverchair), Peter Cohen (from Austrade's LA office) and Dianne Meyer (artist manager) who will be discussing the changes to the North American music industry due to the impact of the digital age.
For a new artist, Stephen has been generating quite a buzz since the release of his debut album, "Broken Hill", last year. His latest hit, "Let's Fall In Love Again", is a duet with Australia's Queen of Country Music Tania Kernaghan and after debuting at #3 on the Music Network Country Top 30 it remained in the Top 10 for 27 weeks!
His new single, "Don't Kick My Dog", has just been released and the video features cameo appearances from actors Stewart Finlay McLennan ("National Treasure") and Becky O'Donohue ("I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry") and Troy MacCubbin (lead guitarist from international supergroup, t.A.T.u - who also used to play in Ken Forster's country band in Traralgon).

The Klezmatics are world-renowned Grammy-winning klezmer superstars. They erupted out of New York City's East Village in 1986 and revitalized klezmer for the new century with music that is steeped in Eastern European Jewish tradition and spirituality, while incorporating contemporary themes such as human rights and anti-fundamentalism and eclectic musical influences including Arab, African, Latin and Balkan rhythms, jazz and punk.
In the course of over twenty years they have released nine albums of wild, spiritual, provocative, reflective and ecstatically danceable music, forever redefining and transcending traditional labels. The Klezmatics have collaborated with numerous luminaries including folk hero Arlo Guthrie, classical legend Itzhak Perlman, Israeli pop icons Chava Alberstein and Ehud Banai, beat poet Allen Ginsberg, the Master Musicians of Jajouka, the Ben Folds Five and Kosher Gospel singer Joshua Nelson.
Their work has extended to numerous theater, film, dance and television projects, including Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tony Kushner's A Dybbuk and It's An Undoing World and Pilobolus Dance Theatre's Davenen. The Klezmatics have reached millions through performances and features on CBS's Late Night with David Letterman, PBS' Great Performances, the BBC's Rhythms of the World, and John Peel Show, various NPR programs (A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor, New Sounds Live and Soundcheck), CBS's Nightwatch, FOX's After Breakfast, MTV News and Sex and the City. Additionally, their song “NY Psycho Freylekhs” was heard regularly on Air America Radio's The Al Franken Show. They have played in over twenty countries at some of the most storied venues and renowned festivals worldwide, including Central Park Summerstage, Carnegie Hall, Pirineos Sur (Spain), Colours of Ostrava (Czech Republic), Pohoda Festival (Slovakia), Jazzsomer Graz (Austria) and the Heimatklänge Festival (Germany).
The Klezmatics have garnered numerous accolades throughout their career, including a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album (for Wonder Wheel: Lyrics by Woody Guthrie), a New York Jewish Music Award (Best Klezmer Band, 2006) a GLAMA (Gay and Lesbian American Music Award) and the German Critics Award (twice) and have topped the Billboard world music charts on numerous occasions.
Singer/multi-instrumentalist Lorin Sklamberg is a founding member of the Yiddish-American roots band the Klezmatics. He has been heard on innumerable recordings and live shows, solo and in collaboration, with such diverse artists as Itzhak Perlman (dueting on his original composition, “Nign”), Don Byron, Jane Siberry, Marc Cohn, Moxy Früvous, Paradox Trio, Hip Hop Hoodios, Esma Redzepova, Emmylou Harris, Tracy Grammer, Neil Sedaka and, of course, the Klezmatics. His song “Headdy Down” (from the Klezmatics' 2006 Grammy Award winning cd Wonder Wheel: Lyrics by Woody Guthrie) was recently printed in Sing Out! magazine. He has composed and performed for film (including Hilary Helstein's 2007 documentary As Seen Through These Eyes, narrated by Maya Angelou), dance, stage and circus, and has produced a number of recordings of world and theater music. He also plays solo and teaches from London, Paris and Weimar to Kiev and St. Petersburg. His and bandmate Frank London's concerts of Hasidic “spirituals” have resulted in two recordings: Nigunim with jazz pianist Uri Caine and the Zmiros Project with multi-instrumentalist Rob Schwimmer. His other ongoing collaborations include Esn: Songs from the Kitchen, a concert celebration of Jewish food combining singing and cooking created with London and Adrienne Cooper and Harts un Soul: A Celebration of Yiddish Theater in Song with Yiddish diva Joanne Borts and Rob Schwimmer. Lorin co-founded the New York-based non-profit organization Living Traditions and coordinated its event KlezKamp: The Yiddish Folk Arts Program for 14 years. By day Lorin serves as the Sound Archivist of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. “One of the premier American singers in any genre.” - Robert Christgau, All Things Considered, National Public Radio. Violinist Lisa Gutkin is one of New York City's busiest musicians. Her varied musical palette has led to collaborations with a wide array of artists, the founding of the 'downtown Celtic' group Whirligig and to her joining the Klezmatics. Having appeared on over 100 recordings, Lisa also writes for film, radio, television and theater; the final season of HBO's Sex and the City featured her compositions, and her cameo on-screen appearance with the Klezmatics continues to be viewed worldwide. Lisa has performed and recorded with some of the best traditional Irish musicians on either side of the Atlantic, including Tommy Sands, John Whelan, Steve Cooney and Cathie Ryan. As part of the Fast Folk collective, she appeared with the Roches, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega and Richard Shindell, among others, and she has worked with Jane Siberry, John Cale and Bob Neuwirth (with the Soldier String Quartet) and contemporary R&B artist Pru. Her theater credits include Mabou Mines' Peter and Wendy, Elizabeth Swados' Song of Songs and Dutch choreographer Maggie Boogaart's Seeing is believing, for which she composed and performed the score. Lisa can also be heard occasionally with the Demolition String Band on their Ollabelle Reed project and with Lisa's Pieces (a bluegrassy band featuring her original compositions). Lisa's most recent project was a composition commission for Song For New York: What Women Do While Men Sit Knitting, a Mabou Mines performance piece (premier production summer 2007

House Concert in Tallabudgera
Those interested should send back an emai ! We had the informal opening gathering last night in the beautiful space overlooking the valley featuring a surprise line-up. The next could well be a celtic flavour however last night saw the surprising sound of the Czechoslovakian harmonic flute performed by Ole who was also amazing on didgeridoo. Mykl Lozin gave passionate fiddle while introducing us to France residing Alistair Graham on some jazzy piano (though more renown for creating (actually hand-making)the "Charmed" series Book of Enchantments & Spells) and similarly in the Harry Potter films! ( www.alistairgraham.com ). Roscoe and friends from Ed's Shed up the valley gave more song and melody while Jay from Gold Coast's 'Mason Rack' danced on the humble snare and ride cymbal. These gatherings are likely to happen on a monthly basis with Dheeraj Shrestra (Tabla prince!) initiating the plan with intent to perform at one soon as well. As it is a limited space for audience it will be essential pre-buy from the 40 tickets. The concept is "Soaring with the Eagles"! the 'performance space' will remain a little secret for a while - available only to those who show an interest.

I have to tell you, if seek a special OZ holiday, the trip by bus group 'Nullabour Traveller' is hard to beat. Talk to Hassie at www.thetraveller.net.au
I took my 20 yr old daughter across to Perth with a gathering of 17 to 35 yr olds, mainly lasses from Europe. A wonderful multi-cultural time had by all. The Lawnmowers ( http://www.myspace.com/thelawnmowersbluegrass) sweetened the wine at Griffith 'La Festa' & De Bortlie's Wine at Easter leaving just enough time to make it back to the National Folk Fest in Canberra for the final flings on Sunday Night and Monday cullimating with a Supper Club gathering at The Troubadour where we meet Marcus Sturrock for the first time and have a hoot of a concert complete with unphasing power blackout and soaring vocals from Brookie Schiemer. An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water.
At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water.
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments.
But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. 'I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.'
The old woman smiled, 'Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?'
'That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them.'
'For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table.
Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.'
Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.
You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.
SO, to all of my crackpot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path!
And send this to any or all of your Crack Pot friends!
